I have developed unique methods specifically tailored for Mandarin and Cantonese speakers to learn clear and proper English pronunciation. ESL educators often allow even their advanced students to use Chinese language sounds to approximate English sounds. Many of these educators don't even realize this is happening. This is the main reason why asian ESL speakers' English is accented, often very strongly. So, it is important for an ESL student to learn English from a native English speaker. To learn English from someone who themselves is an ESL speaker will likely result in 'accent stacking' for the student, making their English unclear and difficult to understand. Among other things, I focus on training my intermediate and advanced students to produce real English sounds by coaching them in awareness of the positioning and movement of their tongue, lips and jaw. In this way, their mouths develop the 'muscle memory' required to produce natural English sounds, resulting in an accent-free, native English pronunciation. I have been using this method with great success-- both in person and by video call-- for years now in Hong Kong. I first qualified as an elementary school teacher in South Africa in 1986. I then taught children from ages 8 to 13 for 10 years in a local elementary school.
