Sorry for this long long description. I'm an Arts student, I write long essays lol
Make sure you check out my short video at the end and just send me an inquiry if you don't bother to read this :D
Hi there, my name is Lareina and I am a self-motivated language enthusiast that speaks Mandarin, English, intermediate Spanish and beginners Cantonese and I'm currenly teaching myself Japanese. I am also a Linguistics and Media major at the University of Melbourne who has experience in teaching both English and Mandarin. More specifically, I have VCE Chinese and English IELTS tutoring experience and have been tutoring beginner/intermediate/upper intermediate Mandarin one-on-one since 2019. I was born and raised in China and came to Australia for undergraduate studies. I have taught students of different ages and cultural backgrounds and gained a lot of insights both from teaching and linguistics studies.
My tutoring methodology varies depending on the student’s needs and learning style. Having said that, the key philosophy is based on proactive learning. For example, if you are struggling with listening comprehension, I would prompt you to listen closely to the audio while taking notes, look for the keywords and explain to me what you understand or don't understand in Chinese. We could then relisten again together and figure out the issues. This, I believe, is the best way to help you thoroughly understand the audio content and give you extra opportunies to practice speaking at the same time compared to just me giving you the answers and my analyses straight away. I know it might sound a bit intimidating especially when you don't have enough confidence in the language. That is totally okay but please remember practice makes perfect and it is the actual verbalization and self-correction that help you improve and build confidence.
The typical length of a single lesson would be 1 hour or 1 hour and a half depending on your personal attention span. It is always adjustable with trial and error so do not worry at all. All levels and ages are welcome to my lessons. They are typically topic-based and I would present a lot of fun and engaging activities and learning materials as well. I aim at making them as engaging, fun and rewarding as possible. For example, I can teach you Chinese Calligraphy which I’ve been doing since I was little or how to sing Mandarin songs if you’re interested in music just like me. However, this does not necessarily have to be our class content if you prefer more hardcore learning experience or simply just want to work on the basics etc. If you are an advanced learner, we can also discuss deep topics or advanced Chinese literature. All in all, I could always tailor the course content according to your current Mandarin level.
Apart from standard tutoring, I can also share with you my personal language learning techniques as I am a language learning enthusiast equipped with linguistics knowledge. If you would like to learn Mandarin, Chinese culture and build confidence, I am more than happy to guide you on your language learning journey. I’m super patient and easy-going so please feel free to reach out and ask me any questions! We can then arrange an initial lesson and figure out how to meet your needs to the maximum. I will make sure I get back to you within 48 hours when you first reach out and within hours for follow-ups.
Try my class! It won't hurt :)
No, not necessarily true in my opinion. A lot of the students I’ve met find Mandarin really hard because they tend not to have a clear and structured language learning goal as well as effective techniques. Besides, Melbourne is a very multicultural nation where you get to encounter people from different cultural backgrounds here and there including Chinese. This gives you an incredible advantage of practicing your conversational skills. Of course, we all know Covid-19 has made things a bit harder but you are always welcome to practice with me online.
