Hello, My name is Emi, and I’m a Japanese language tutor based in Tokyo. While working in an office, I also teach Japanese. I majored in economics at university and later spent over 20 years working in back-office roles at housing manufacturers, consulting firms, and nonprofit organizations. In 2005, I entered an art university, completed a master’s program in art studies while working, and am now writing my doctoral dissertation. I also work as a part-time lecturer, supporting students in their studies and guiding them in essay writing. About My Lessons The main goal of my lessons is to help you communicate smoothly and effectively with Japanese speakers. To achieve this, we focus on: • Expressing your thoughts clearly (speaking/writing) • Understanding what others are saying or writing (listening/reading) Customized Lessons I tailor each lesson to suit your goals, level, and interests. In our first lesson, I’ll ask you about your objectives and specific needs, so we can design a program just for you. Lessons are conducted primarily in Japanese, but I can assist in English if needed. I also have a basic understanding of Spanish, so feel free to relax and enjoy the lessons! Examples of Lessons I Offer • Practical conversation practice using natural Japanese (without textbooks) • Practice with materials like GENKI etc. • Reading news articles or short stories written in Japanese together Specialized Japanese Lessons • Japanese for the Workplace: Writing emails, communicating with colleagues and supervisors, and understanding Japanese business culture • Academic Japanese: Reading academic texts, writing reports and theses, and using language suitable for scholarly discussions (especially in fields such as art, culture, literature, society, and philosophy) My Approach to Japanese Learning My own experience of learning English and Spanish has helped me understand the depth of Japanese expressions and culture. Japanese reflects unique cultural values and ways of thinking, which often makes it difficult to translate directly. By learning about the cultural and contextual background of Japanese expressions, you’ll not only improve your skills but also use the language more naturally and effectively. That’s why in my lessons, I aim to share the language itself and the cultural nuances behind it. I believe this approach can make your communication in Japanese more enjoyable and meaningful. Thank you for reading. I’m here to support your Japanese learning journey and help you explore the language and culture confidently and joyfully. If you’re interested in my lessons, feel free to contact me.

I am Japanese, living in Tokyo. I speak Japanese and English. I have worked for a multinational computer manufacturer as a reliability test engineer for more than 20 years, dealing with a lot of technical data and communicating in English and Japanese. I have always been interested in philosophy since junior high school. At University, I majored in phenomenology, and even after graduation, my interest in philosophy is getting deeper and deeper, especially concerning the concept of time and semiotics. I have also been quite interested in my native language, Japanese since some people say that the subject is not necessary for Japanese syntax. On the other hand, the more I read the works of phenomenologist Edmund Husserl, the more I see a deep connection between the language per se and its multiplicity of phenomena as temporality as seen in judgment and proposition, and in distinguishing what is syntactic from what is not. Furthermore, the iconicity of onomatopoeia, frequently seen in Japanese, is also interesting from a semiotic point of view. Teaching a language is a philosophical activity since it is obviously concerned with the pre-logical or the meta-logical. I would love to tailor my lessons according to your individual interests, and above all, to enjoy conversation!
