I speak and write English and Filipino on a daily basis. I have written papers, and delivered trainings/orientations in both languages. Formal Filipino is much harder to learn since the words are a lot deeper, and are rarely used. Except for when you are in the academe or legal industry. I believe it’s easier to learn Filipino when you have a Spanish background. However, unlike other languages Filipino only assigns gender to people. This applies both to written and oral. I graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science major in Filipino as a Cum Laude and currently studying for a master's in Filipino education. The easiest way to learn Filipino is knowing first the basic Filipino words and their meaning. Filipino is relatively difficult for English speakers to learn. It needs more patience in learning it with a good teacher. In this case, it will take you around 150-200 hours to learn basic Filipino (that is if you study at least one hour per session on a daily basis). That includes memorizing basic Filipino words, learning how they're used in a sentence, and having a practice session with a native speaker.
