My goal is not only to teach students grammar and words, my goal is to introduce students to Croatian culture and way of living, throw games, songs and literature. Learning language is not enough. Only when one knows the culture of a nation, one can really be able to use that language in proper way and sense.

Hello everyone, My name is Ružica (Růžená in Czech, Rosie in English :)) and I was born in Split, Croatia, but am currently living in Zagreb, Croatia. However, but due to personal circumstances, I intend to move to Prague in September or October at the latest. I am therefore looking for jobs that would suit my education, interests, and abilities and for a change, passions. Regarding my formal education, I have an MA degree in Law (Faculty of Law, Split) and an MA degree in Sociology and Comparative Literature Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Zagreb (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Zagreb). I am also currently attending a Ph.D. course in Humanities. However, my deepest interests lie in the fields of culture in general, mainly writing and acting. During the last ten years, I have attended many acting groups and classes, most importantly, for the last four years I have been attending Studio Kubus in Zagreb twice a week (studying acting theories and techniques, from Stanislavski to Chekhov and Strassberg and working on texts of Shakespeare, Moliere, and contemporary playwrights) and have recently premiered an authorial play Three Mothers at the SKAZ theatre festival with two of my colleagues. Teaching someone my mother tongue is indeed a new thing for me, but I am looking forward to that possibility since I am an extrovert and love meeting new people, perhaps above everything else. Language as such is also a big thing for me since all of my previously mentioned interests are both deeply rooted and interconnected with that mysterious thing we use to connect one with another. I would certainly be up for inventing creative and student-centered approach - building on what he/she already likes/knows/is interested in or is in any way emotionally attached to. I'd be glad to introduce a student with some great literature, films, and music in my language, for I think that art is the best, and somehow the most right way of acquiring knowledge in this field.

Electrical engineering and computer science student at TU Wien, writting my master thesis. If you’ve searched and found this article, the chances are that you are already thinking about learning Croatian, or you may have already started. In that case, you must have a few reasons of your own as to why you decided to pick up this beautiful, yet complex language. There are many reasons why you might want to make Croatian next on your language-learning list: you love traveling and can’t wait to explore Croatia and mingle with the locals you have a Croatian background and want to learn your language of heritage you are planning to move to Croatia your partner is Croatian and you want to be able to communicate in their native language there is a large Croatian-speaking community in your area that you want to connect with you love a good language learning challenge and Croatian seems a good place to start Whichever your reason for learning Croatian, make sure it’s a strong one to keep you motivated and persistent. Here are a couple of reasons that might help you get and stay excited: Croatia has a rich culture and history If you love history and exploring new cultures, the best way to immerse yourself in that culture is by learning the language and meeting the locals. Sitting on the border between the Balkan peninsula and Western Europe, Croatia’s history books have been marked with numerous wars, epic battles, courageous warriors, old kings, political turmoil, and fights for the independence of both country and language. Historical evidence tells us that Croats arrived in the Balkans in the early 7th century! Initially, they were nomadic people living in small villages but very soon they became a recognized kingdom. The first king of Croatia, King Tomislav, was crowned in 925 AD. That’s half a century before America was even discovered… Imagine the richness of history! Croats are extremely proud of their heritage and are very patriotic. They would love to share their rich history with you. Croats also love everyone attempting to speak to them in their own language. So, if for instance, you speak Croatian and then mention the Croatian football team’s success in the 2018 World Cup, you’ll be extremely popular! Croats have managed to preserve their historical cities that speak of the life people once lived. It’s no wonder Croatia is called – The Mediterranean as it once was. Croatian is a great place to start if you are interested in Slavic languages Once you are able to speak Croatian, it will be very simple for you to pick up some of the other Slavic languages. In fact, although they are distinct and different languages, you will have no problem understanding Serbian, Bosnian or Montenegrin. Even though they have their differences, learning one of these languages will automatically propel you into understanding the rest. If you were to ask locals how many languages they speak, they will jokingly tell you that they speak several – alluding to the aforementioned languages. These Slavic languages are all different and distinct, but also very similar to each other. If you can speak one, you could understand the other three and communicate without much difficulty. In fact, if you were to place a Croat, Serb, Bosnian and Montenegrian in a room and each spoke their own language, they would have absolutely no difficulty in understanding each other. You can read more about the differences and similarities of these languages here. Now, how about that? Basically becoming multilingual by learning a single language? Not a bad deal! Also, in comparison to these other languages, Croatian uses a Latin script. Serbian uses Cyrillic, similar to that of Russian, with some differences, and Bosnian uses both scripts. For an English speaker, it would be easiest to begin with Croatian so you wouldn’t have to learn another alphabet. Croatian is also a great base to learn other Slavic languages (Slovenian or Bulgarian, for example) since these languages share similar vocabulary and grammar structures.

Hi, I’m Dali and I was born in Croatia, where I lived my first 18 years and thought that no other language I would ever need. Well, like in a movie, almost over a night, I turned 19 and found myself in Hungary with zero knowledge of Hungarian or English. Yes, I realized how wrong I was just a year earlier. To make a long story short and keep you awake, when I turned 25 I held a bachelor’s degree in teaching English and Croatian Language and Literature (graduated at a Hungarian college in Hungarian) and was working as a trilingual (English-Hungarian-Croatian) interpreter for the US Army (for little more than 5 years). Now I’m in my mid-forties and learning Italian (it simply feels good and I just love skiing in Italy). Reason I’ve mentioned this part of my life is that I have experienced multiple times how important and how far a good command of a language can take you, moreover I truly know what it takes to go from beginner’s level to proficient level. What I’m trying to say is that learning a language requires a little effort and a lot of time but if you do it right the world is yours. Everybody defines the process of learning a language in its own way. I would say it is like trying to be good at sports. You decide what type of sport you like, how good you want to be and how much time you have for it. The more you train the better athlete you become. Hard work always pays back! I assure you that’s the case with learning a language. You have to decide why you are learning and what your realistic goals are (for example you need to pass an exam or somebody you want to date speaks only Croatian or you want to be able to talk about soccer in Croatian, etc…). I will be more than happy to help you reach your goals but it is you who will do most of the hard work. I have 2 years’ experience in teaching general English and Croatian through different methods and materials all including impart skills as reading, writing, speaking and listening. I work with students from beginner’s level to upper intermediate level. I try to create a fun, positive, and challenging learning atmosphere during my classes. That’s all from me now, I look forward to hearing back from you.

In a world where the Croatian language is considered to be one of the hardest languages, I will help you to be one of the rare ones that understand and speak it. Further, knowledge about the English language is required since It will be used as a translation mean. Lastly, I will not only provide knowledge about the language but also about the culture behind it. Croatian people value their tradition and often reward those who are familiar with it with kind courtesy. I am looking forward to working with you :)
