I was born and raised in a part of Nigeria where Yoruba was spoken by all, and we hardly communicated in English. Yoruba was taught in our schools, right from kindergarten to the final year of high school, and encouraged by parents as a daily means of communication. I recently earned my Law degree from Ekiti state University and while I was in school, I taught piano lessons as the church keyboardist and also taught my boyfriend at the time how to speak Yoruba as he wanted to impress my parents when he visited them (He is Igbo). The language is honestly easy to learn considering how over the years it has evolved to adopt a lot of English words into her dictionary. The basics are literally the key to mastering the language. Learning should take you about 2 to 3 months for basic knowledge. However, we never stop learning, even though I am still learning.
