Private German Tutor in Hong Kong and Online

Hallo! Who would like to find the fun in learning German, while reaching clear goals?

My name is Lea and I would love to accompany you on your educational journey!

Born in Germany, I grew up bilingual, as I moved to South Africa post kindergarten, followed by Japan, and ending up back in Germany for high school! I then studied in Switzerland, worked in the UK, and have now been in Hong Kong for the past 7 years.

My diverse background has given me a unique and multicultural perspective, which has definitely influenced my teaching style. My lessons always aim to be fully inclusive, sensitive to cultural differences, and, in group settings, a platform where students can learn from each other’s cultural richness.

With a PhD in Environmental Science, Policy and Management, and an undergraduate degree in Hospitality Management with a financial focus, I have trained my communicative, presentation and writing skills in an extensive manner. I would also be more than happy to discuss subject matters in these areas but can of course branch out to any required topics!

Over the years, I have held various teaching positions, most recently as a facilitator for the German language and culture discussion group at a university in Hong Kong. In the four years I spent teaching German in this group, the focus was on improving conversational language skills, enhancing students’ confidence to communicate in German, either as preparation for studying or working in Germany, or due to a general interest in the language.

Students were of varying age groups and backgrounds, which enhanced the group’s diversity. My position here gave me the opportunity to discover ways in which to integrate various skill levels into my lesson plans in order to maximize the education potential for all group members. I always aimed to keep lessons fun and informative, trying to uncover personalized ways to motivative different students.

During my time in HK, I have also helped to prepare candidates for the so called Deutscholympiade, a speech competition in HK offered by the Goethe-Institut, which has widened my teaching spectrum, as well as having helped to raise the German language profile at my university.

During my PhD program, I also worked as a teaching assistant for 2 years. While actual teaching duties were minimal, I did gain valuable insights into presentation techniques, course design and addressing students concerns and questions, both in a group and on a one-on-one level. Furthermore, I did receive training on student engagement and teaching techniques.

I have also held various teaching jobs during my undergraduate program. I worked as an SI (supplemental instruction) leader in IT, which taught me to guide students to discover answers and knowledge themselves, rather than simply delivering everything on a silver plate. This is meant to enhance both engagement, as well as knowledge retention.

Furthermore, as part of an honours society, I tutored groups of students in varying subjects, ranging from Real Estate Finance to Statistics. I have also always enjoyed tutoring fellow students one-on-one.

Overall, I am experienced in teaching students of all different age groups and would love to welcome anyone to learn German in a personalized and engaging manner! I am very committed to finding which teaching style works for you, I care about your personal learning goals, and I will do my best to guide you with patience and care!

I would love to hear from you soon!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest way to learn German in Hong Kong?

As for any language, it helps to combine proper German lessons with additional conversational German training. The more you try to actively communicate in a language, the easier it tends to get! A combination of personal discipline and finding a fun way to deepen your language skills, as well as generally increasing your exposure to the German language as much as possible, should thus prove incredibly useful in honing your language skills.

Is it difficult to learn German in Hong Kong?

While I do believe that German is a rather difficult language to learn, I also believe that your success rate will largely depend on your own commitment to learning the language and willingness to put the time and work into the process. Hereby it is invaluable to find a teaching style that is properly adapted to your personal learning style and goals, while immersing yourself into the language with the help of media and communicating with other German speakers is definitely highly useful in reaching your language goals!
