Achieve more to learn Cantonese from local teacher

I am Mr. Liu. It is very nice to know you are interested in learning Chinese or Cantonese. I am a Chinese living in Hong Kong and have been a Chinese language teacher in a Secondary school for forty years. I have retired from the teaching post in secondary school now, but I am glad to teach again through personal tutorials, such as teaching native students Chinese Language, or foreigners Cantonese. After retirement, I want to teach foreign friends to know Chinese and Chinese culture. As there are many foreign neighbors living near my home, I know their language needs in communication.

In the past, I graduated from the University of Hong Kong and completed the master's program in Chinese Literature at the Chinese University. The education I received gave me the best understanding of language and culture. As I have taught Chinese Language, Literature, and Culture in Secondary school for forty years, I have a great understanding of the learning of Chinese Language as well. It is really useful in experience because students learning Chinese or Cantonese nowadays always meet and face language and cultural difficulties at the same time. In learning Cantonese, students also wish to understand more about local Culture, which is useful for them to work and live in Hong Kong or nearby China.

I admit that learning Cantonese is not easy, but the effectiveness of learning is two-way; a good teacher can make the learning process enjoyable and fruitful for both parties. In the learning process of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, talented students also need guidance from mentors. Everyone has their own unique learning ability because of their mother's culture and educational background. Therefore, the process of learning languages is at the same time the process of discovering yourself and giving full exercise to your strengths. Both teachers and students can experience new experiences of learning and teaching. I am happy to teach and listen. I am willing to pay more patience and attention to the needs of students. I hope that the students who follow me can get the fruits of learning so that they can make good use of Cantonese in work and life, and develop their ability to communicate.

The design of the learning process has always been effective and efficient in helping people learn the language. Students will find that Cantonese is difficult to learn in the beginning, but they will experience an easier way through a well-designed learning process. This learning process is not dull at all because the strong tradition of culture in Cantonese will actually strengthen their learning interests. Of course, learning should not be rushed. Starting from the current level, it takes time and effort to reach proficiency step by step. Every lesson is precious. I hope there are well-designed lessons and there are also students who are devoted to learning.

As a Christian, I accept this part-time job as my mission.

Before starting the lesson, may I ask my students the same question: “Lei hou! Before starting the lesson, may I know more about the language level of my student? I hope I can prepare the most suitable teaching material for the lessons.”
