Not at all. Johannesburg is actually one of the best places to learn a new language because you're immersed in it every day. Being surrounded by Zulu in shops, on public transport, and in social situations really speeds up the learning process. Sure, picking up any new language comes with its own set of challenges, but having so many chances to practice speaking and listening makes mastering Zulu here not only practical but also a lot more enjoyable than you might think.
For conversational purposes - such as greetings, essential phrases, and holding basic everyday dialogues - you can expect to build this foundation very quickly, often within 1 to 3 months of consistent study. Achieving a deeper understanding of grammar, complex sentences, and full comfort in most everyday situations typically takes longer, usually between 6 to 12 months of regular practice. The key advantage of learning here is that you can immediately apply and solidify your skills in real-life situations, dramatically speeding up your entire journey.
