About Me – Swedish & Academic Tutor 🇸🇪🇦🇺
Hi! I’m Vilma, a native Swedish speaker and second-year Bachelor of Social Sciences student at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), majoring in Politics and International Relations. Originally from Sweden, I’ve also lived in Switzerland and France before moving to Australia, giving me an international background and a genuine passion for languages, education and cultural exchange.
My qualifications and experience
I graduated from Lundsberg, a boarding school in Sweden, with excellent academic results and received a Writing Excellence Award. At university, I consistently achieve Distinction and High Distinction grades.
I have previous experience tutoring and babysitting children of different ages. I’m patient, friendly and enthusiastic, and I enjoy adapting my teaching style to each student’s individual needs.
Alongside my studies, I work as a Growth & Operations Associate at a Sydney-based technology consultancy, where I’ve further developed my communication and organisational skills.
What can I help you learn?
As a native Swedish speaker who is fluent in English and has a good working knowledge of French, I offer Swedish lessons for both children and adults, from complete beginners to those looking to improve their existing skills.
My lessons can focus on:
* Conversational Swedish and pronunciation
* Reading, writing, spelling and grammar
* Vocabulary and everyday expressions
* Swedish culture and traditions
* Academic Swedish and literacy
* Maintaining Swedish for bilingual children and Swedish-Australian families
I’m particularly passionate about helping children with Swedish heritage maintain their language skills while growing up in Australia. Whether your child understands Swedish but struggles to speak it, or you’re an adult wanting to learn from scratch, I can tailor lessons to your goals.
Is Swedish difficult to learn?
Swedish is actually considered one of the easier languages for English speakers to learn! Both languages share Germanic roots, meaning many words and grammatical structures are surprisingly similar.
The easiest way to learn Swedish is through regular practice, conversation and engaging lessons suited to your level. While pronunciation and certain grammatical features can initially be challenging, Swedish grammar is relatively straightforward compared with many other European languages.
How long does it take to learn Swedish?
This depends on your starting level, goals and how frequently you practise. With consistent lessons and regular exposure to the language, beginners can often start forming simple sentences and having basic conversations within a few months. Becoming conversationally confident generally takes longer, but I’ll help you progress at a comfortable and achievable pace.
My teaching approach
I believe learning a language should be enjoyable, practical and encouraging rather than intimidating. My lessons are personalised to each student’s age, interests, abilities and learning goals.
For younger children, I like incorporating games, stories, reading and interactive activities to make Swedish feel natural and fun. For teenagers and adults, I can offer more structured lessons focusing on conversation, grammar, vocabulary and written communication.
My aim is to create a relaxed and supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and gradually building confidence.
Location and availability
I’m based between Coogee and the Northern Beaches in Sydney and am flexible with both locations and scheduling. I’m happy to travel to students across Sydney and also offer online lessons.
Whether you’re looking to learn Swedish for travel, family connections, cultural interests or simply the enjoyment of learning a new language, I’d love to help you achieve your goals!
I look forward to helping you on your Swedish language journey! 🇸🇪
Learning Swedish in Sydney can be easier than you might think, especially with personalised lessons from a native Swedish speaker! Swedish and English share Germanic roots, meaning many words and grammatical structures are quite similar. As a native Swedish speaker who is also fluent in English, I can explain concepts clearly and help you understand the language step by step.
Swedish is actually considered one of the more accessible languages for native English speakers to learn! While certain aspects, such as pronunciation, word order and grammatical gender, can initially be challenging, Swedish grammar is relatively straightforward compared with many other European languages.
As someone who has grown up speaking Swedish and has also learned other languages, including English and French, I understand the challenges of learning a new language and how important it is to have a patient and encouraging teacher.
My approach focuses on making Swedish enjoyable, practical and accessible, regardless of your age or experience. I adapt lessons to suit each student’s learning style, incorporating conversation, reading, writing and interactive activities.
For children, particularly those from Swedish-Australian families, I aim to make Swedish a natural and enjoyable part of their lives through stories, games and everyday conversation. For adults, I can provide structured lessons focusing on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and conversational confidence.
