Konnichiwa! I’m Kumi, a full-time Japanese teacher and living permanently in Melbourne. I have over 8 years of teaching experience and have helped thousands of students from a wide range of backgrounds and learning goals.
My lessons are friendly, relaxed, and tailored to suit your individual needs. Whether you’re learning Japanese for travel, work, JLPT preparation, or simply for the joy of it, I’ll create lessons that match your pace and interests.
If you’re a complete beginner, don’t worry! I’ll teach in English, making it easy and comfortable to build a strong foundation before gradually using more Japanese as your confidence grows.
If you are planning a trip to Japan, I also offer practical travel Japanese lessons, focusing on real-life conversations and useful expressions that you’ll actually use while travelling.
My goal is to help you enjoy learning Japanese while building the confidence to communicate naturally. I believe that learning a language should be both effective and fun.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’d love to help you on your Japanese learning journey!
There is no “magic shortcut” to learning Japanese, but there is an easier way. The key is consistency. Even one lesson a week, combined with a little practice between lessons, can lead to remarkable progress over time.
I focus on helping students understand how Japanese works, not just memorise it. By learning through practical conversation in a relaxed and supportive environment, you’ll develop the confidence to use Japanese naturally in everyday situations.
How long it takes to learn Japanese depends on your goals, how often you study, and how much you practise outside of lessons.
Most beginners can hold simple everyday conversations after about 6-12 months of consistent weekly lessons and regular practice. If your goal is to become conversational, it often takes 1-2 years. Reaching an advanced level or passing higher JLPT levels will naturally take longer.
The most important factor isn’t studying for long hours, it’s studying consistently. Even one lesson a week, combined with a little practice between lessons, can lead to steady and lasting progress. My goal is to make learning enjoyable, practical, and sustainable so that you stay motivated and continue improving over time.
