I've also lived in the U.S for about a year. I am fluent in French and English, French is my mother tongue. I believe the best way to learn a language is by conversing with native speakers! I have encountered many individuals in my life who have expressed to me that they desperately desired to speak French, but they did not have the courage to speak the language as they were afraid people would ridicule them.
