I'm an international yoga facilitator and a mother of a 18y old. A native Finn who's been living abroad for over 20 years out of which 12 years in Asia. Currently based in Finland.
I know how daunting and frustrating it can be to be in a foreign country with a new strange language. I've tried also myself to learn many different languages in various settings abroad! Sometimes with a better result other times worse. I understand how big role speaking clearly enough does. I often witnessed native speakers (of any nationality) not paying attention enough how they speak to foreigners.
I've led big international groups in various trainings and got direct feedback from the students how they appreciated me speaking slowly and clearly which enabled them to follow better.
My experience at the end of the day is, that the motivation is the key. If you are truly motivated to learn the language, you will. If you are not 100% committed you already have set yourself up for a failure.
I'll help you to get more comfortable with your Finnish skills and feel more like a local!

Be positive and enthusiastic about the learning. Listen. Listen a lot of the natives speaking Finnish. Listen to the news, radio programs, mingle with the Finns. Be brave in the super market and use a few Finnish words. Watch Netflix with Finnish subs. Read. Read the Helsingin Sanomat. It's all up to you my dear! I know some friends who've made progress quite fast and some who didn't really get much beyond a few words... If theres' the will theres the way! My question to you is, how motivated are YOU?
