I am Ivo from The Netherlands. While I am not a native English speaker, I have studied at Tilburg University in English for 3.5 years and wrote my Bachelor's thesis in English. I went on exchange to Ljubljana University for half a year and scored a C2 for my online Erasmus English test. I believe native speakers have their perks, but they are not necessarily superior to non-native speakers for teaching. As English is my second language, I have experience studying it from the perspective of a foreigner. This gives a different perspective compared to native speakers, which I personally believe is helpful in understanding the struggles of non-native speakers trying to learn English.

I think it is even better for the tutor to also have at least a basic understanding of the language of the student. I came to Seoul in August and have been studying Korean at SNU since. While I am not nearly fluent in Korean yet, I understand the pronunciation, the way Korean sentences are formed, and how the grammar differs from English. As Korean is fundamentally different from English, understanding Korean helps in identifying the mistakes that Koreans tend to make.

저는 과외 선생님이 한국어를 기본적으로 이해하고 있어야 한다고 생각합니다. 저는 8월에 서울에 온 이후로 계속 서울대학교에서 한국어를 공부하고 있습니다. 아직 한국어를 완전히 유창하게 하지는 못하지만, 한국어 발음과 한국어 문장이 형성되는 방식, 문법이 영어와 어떻게 다른지 충분히 이해하고 있습니다. 한국어는 영어와 근본적으로 다르기 때문에, 한국어를 이해하는 것은 한국인들이 자주 하는 실수를 이해하고 지도하는데 도움이 될 것입니다.
