Hi, my name is John, and I am getting a master’s degree in Madrid. I taught English as a second language a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I worked with children as young as 14 and adults as old as 50.
Because my master’s degree is only Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. I have plenty of time to tutor English, I could even take lessons during the weekend.
To establish a good tutor-pupil relationship, you need to lead with empathy and active listening. When you take to time and effort to pay attention to what people say it becomes easy to determine what things matter to them and how to apply those things to the lessons.
When learning a new language, for instance, it’s much easier to capture and retain a student’s attention when the subject relates to the things they enjoy. This could be music, movies, books, sports, etc.
For a first-class, I would first evaluate how keen the student is on learning the language, sometimes people do it out of compulsion, rather than genuine interest, so I would take that into consideration. Afterward, I would enquire about some of the things the students enjoy, this allows me to integrate that specific kind of content into the classes.
To make classes more fun and interactive, since they are online, I would use Kahoot or Quizizz, but I am open to learning about other tools you could recommend.
If the student has a particularly hard time with a topic my first instinct would be to investigate it further and try to prepare a lesson plan that has that in mind.
Learning a language in a country where it is spoken is much easier because you get the chance to practice more often.
Practice, practice and practice. It also helps if you are willing to consume media in the language you are studying.
