I am a Year 2 LLB student, born and raised in Hong Kong. I went through the local education system and took my DSEs, having studied physics and biology as my electives and the usual core subjects. I did quite well in my exams, and I credit these successes to having a "keep it simple" approach to studying and not trying to confuse myself with too many "get-smart-quick" tactics that are often quite popular among secondary school students --- especially in English learning, for which there are several celebrity tutoring schools that promote rote learning. Learning shouldn't be done this way and especially not language learning. I hope to do my part in making students comfortable with growing by making mistakes and finding confidence along the way.
My relevant teaching experiences include English-speaking lessons with an adult (in their mid-30s). We practiced natural conversation by exploring various topics of relevance to daily life. I think this is the best approach to learning English, especially for adults who don't need examination skills anymore but at the end of the day, what's important is that the student finds a learning approach best suited to them.
Theoretically, it should be easy. After all, Hong Kong is an international city with great diversity and a historic English-speaking culture. You'll find that everyone uses the internet and keeps up with pop culture, with English movies and songs being commonplace in Hong Kong social circles. However, many students still struggle in gaining a mastery of the language, especially when it comes to formal reading and writing. I think this is down to the fact that people only passively consume English content without practicing it. Additionally, local schooling culture places a great emphasis on examination tactics which I think divert attention from actually mastering the language; instead of learning how to communicate in English, people merely learn how to do their English exams. There is a subtle, yet important difference there.
I believe that if a daily life approach to learning English is followed, it should not take too long for most students. After all, English is a language that can be practiced quite easily through the internet, so students have ample opportunities to learn by trial-and-error and practical usage.
