Bonjour! Hello! 你好！
I am Tiyo from Malaysia, currently pursuing an Erasmus Mundus Joint master's degree in Tropical Biodiversity:) Going to spend one semester in this beloved country Belgium, and I hope to leave something meaningful to the people so I asked, "What could I contribute?", teaching Mandarin/Chinese comes to my mind! I've been writing Chinese articles for newspapers, and I was a primary school teacher back in M'sia, so I am familiar with teaching and hopefully can bring you good memories!
A huge question! Being a Malaysian-born-Chinese we would say it is difficult, but unless you want to recite or interpret a traditional Chinese poem from the Song dynasty or want to read Chinese literature, learning the basics and communicating in daily life is not that troublesome.:) Love what you learn and you will find magic!
I would say if you want to understand simple phrases and speak in basic sentences, it takes up to one to six months, depending on how deep you want to learn and explore. Learning the Chinese language is like solving codes.
