Born and raised in Hong Kong. I have been using Cantonese for decades. Currently, I am doing my master's degree at AUT.
In many places, I have seen local Cantonese parents desperately asking their teenage children to talk with them in Cantonese. It's not only because of the benefits of knowing Cantonese, but also the special bond of the Cantonese culture in the family.
Using Cantonese is an excellent experience. The joy of going grocery shopping with an "alien" language in Auckland is unspeakable.
