I am a native Vietnamese teacher with 26 years of teaching experience in Singapore. I hold a Bachelor of Education in English, a Bachelor of Psychology and a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and English Teaching.
Throughout my career, I have taught Vietnamese from beginner to advanced levels in private, group, corporate and online classes. My students have included diplomats, government officers, senior managers, business owners, professionals, university students and learners studying Vietnamese for personal, family or travel purposes.
I have also designed Vietnamese-language curricula and learning materials for several language centres. My lessons combine communicative language teaching, psychology, practical conversation, cultural knowledge and interactive activities. I use real-life situations, customised materials, audio, video, role-play, games and structured pronunciation practice to help students communicate naturally and confidently.
One of my most intensive teaching assignments involved teaching Southern Vietnamese to a Singapore government officer preparing for a diplomatic posting to Vietnam. After 400 hours of training, the learner achieved CEFR B2 proficiency. I also taught Northern Vietnamese to another government officer preparing for a defence posting, who achieved CEFR A2 proficiency after 150 hours.
I am currently collaborating with professors, researchers and a neuroscientist in Singapore on a research project exploring methods that may help adult learners acquire a new language more effectively. This experience continues to strengthen my understanding of how adults learn, remember and use a new language.
Vietnamese can be very manageable when it is taught step by step. The grammar is generally more straightforward than many learners expect. Vietnamese verbs do not change according to tense or subject, and nouns do not normally change between singular and plural forms.
The main challenges are pronunciation, tones, listening and choosing the correct form of address. However, these areas become much easier with clear explanation, careful listening practice and regular correction.
The learning time depends on the student’s goals, previous language-learning experience, lesson frequency and personal practice.
With regular lessons and practice, a complete beginner can usually start handling simple everyday conversations within a few months. Reaching a confident conversational or professional level requires a longer and more consistent learning journey.
My aim is not only to teach students Vietnamese vocabulary and grammar, but also to help them understand Vietnamese people, communication styles and culture. Lessons are practical, personalised, supportive and enjoyable.
