Chào bạn, I’m Hà. I was raised in Saigon since I was 3 so I speak perfect Southern Vietnamese. I started teaching English in 2014 and Vietnamese to foreigners in 2021.
I have a BA in English Linguistics and Literature and a certificate in Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language. I understand that if someone speaks their native language, that does not mean they know how to teach it. I always keep learning to update my knowledge and skills in teaching Vietnamese. For the school year 2023 - 2024, I was the Teaching Assistant for Vietnamese classes at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, USA for the Fulbright Foreign Teaching Assistantship sponsored by the United States Department of States.
My lesson contents are based on the textbook Vietnamese as a Second Language published by Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City to make sure there is a structured pathway for us to follow. However, I have my own designed slides to help build “scaffolds” for students and also to be flexible and easier to tailor the lessons to students’ needs and learning pace. The way I conduct the lessons is to focus on the student's speaking practice with real-life situations and authentic language used by locals so that students will be able to communicate with Vietnamese folks smoothly.
Students will be required to work on listening and reading as homework because that needs quite a lot of time to get better (especially listening skills) and it would be most efficient to work on their own (with my supervision). Students will also be able to join my Quizlet sets with audio where they can practice vocabulary on their phone/laptop conveniently with different activity forms that the platform offers to students.
Vietnamese is a tonal language so it would be a bit challenging at the beginning for learners that speak monotone language like English. However, with suitable guides from a professional teacher and learner's effort, they will be able to speak and understand Vietnamese well.
For the pronunciation course, it would take around 8-10 hours to learn how to pronouns all the vowels and consonants and how to read words when they combine together. Learn Vietnamese or any language is a long journey and how long it takes usually depends on how much time and how regular you can spend on the learning. I would say after 3 months of learning Vietnamese 3 hours/week with a teacher and also practice on your own, you probably can speak basic daily conversational Vietnamese.
