Hello and welcome,
My name is Mariana and I live in Australia. My native country is Argentina. Spanish is my first language. My professional environment was scientific; I have a PhD in Biochemistry working as a researcher at different Institutes.
My interest in Spanish teaching started with my arrival in Australia twenty years ago when I asked for Spanish lessons at the Research Institute where I was working. So, I decided to take training courses to be an ELE (Español como Lengua Extranjera) teacher at Cervantes Institute in Sydney. I also had the opportunity to attend conferences and training workshops focused on teaching Spanish.
Preferably, my lessons are focused on Levels A1 and A2; this is a classification given by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las lenguas) and it means that my classes point to students without Spanish acknowledge or those with a Spanish background (i.e: they took some Spanish lessons, work or relative environment with Spanish background) and they looking forward to continuing learning the language.
I also had the experience of learning a second language and one of the motivating factors to learn a language is the feeling of inclusion, not to experience isolation because we cannot communicate in the language of the environment. This linguistic anxiety occurs in both adults and kids. For this reason, I have just started teaching Spanish to kids from five years old. The learning method is based on games, focuses on activities that encourage action, and includes topics such as the person, the society, the music, the arts, and mathematics. It aims to provide tools to the kid to face a new language.
The lessons that I offer have two characteristics: 1) customized because they adapt to individual interests and aims and 2) communicational because speaking a language is a communication tool that allows us to socialize and reach aims.
The structure of my lessons has three sections: the first one is based on vocabulary and grammar content that will be used in that lesson; the second one is to put into practice the first section with cultural and communicational examples and the third section is focused on the revision with activities extra-activities to allow the student to reflect and secure what it was learned during the class and also give me the chance to offer feedback at the beginning of the following class. There is a connection between my lessons to allow the learning of the language to be integrative and gradual. By experience, we learn a language by repetition and integrating concepts and sentences.
In summary, my lessons are the result of the interplay between the student and myself as a teacher and they will depend on what the student wishes to reach, why the student needs it, and how the student wishes to do it.
This is all, if you want to learn Spanish or improve from an initial level, adult or kid, I will be waiting for you in my classes.
See you soon.
Mariana
Hola y bienvenidos,
Mariana
How do I motivate my students?
Any individual has different needs and my compromise is to find a methodology that makes the learning process encouraging. The ultimate goal is to be part of the journey of learning a language.
Certifications:
1) Since 2018, I have taken several courses and graduated at the Cervantes Institute in Sydney which gave me the tools to start giving private lessons.
2) Since we live in a virtual world, the next course that I took was: Acreditación de Tutores AVE (Aula Virtual Espanol) Global. This course gave me the training and accreditation to teach Spanish by the CEFR (Common European Framework of References for Languages) for levels A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1. The course is based on real teaching scenarios in which the multifaceted cultural and linguistic features of both Spain and Latin America are being addressed.
Methodology: Cervantes Institute in Sydney gave me the tools to start giving private lessons and more important gave me the background to prepare individual lessons using a methodology that adapts to the needs of the student. I used multiple materials and books to respond to different levels according to the Common European Framework of References for Languages for A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1.
3)"HACU Spanish Language Training Platform. Prestigiando la lengua española en Estados Unidos. This Webinar explained how to introduce and expand Spanish in a country where English is the official language.
Sydney is a multicultural city with an important community of people speaking Spanish so it is easier to contact people speaking Spanish and to practise the language.
If the person is at the beginner stages of the language, there are plenty of native Spanish tutors living around Sydney that can help to introduce the language. Once the level starts being a B1 stage, one approach is to attend meetings or groups where people have the alternative to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing and also to learn about the different cultural aspects of the Hispano society. For instance: The Sydney language group is one of them. The aim is to develop all four skills to be fluent and self-confident in the language.
