Hello! I’m a native Shona speaker from Zimbabwe, passionate about sharing my language and culture with learners around the world. While I may not have formal teaching certifications, I have helped friends, family, and students learn Shona conversationally, making lessons fun and easy to follow. Shona is a logical and beautiful language — with the right guidance, it’s easier to learn than most people think. My approach focuses on practical conversation, cultural context, and step-by-step practice, so you can start speaking from day one. Most students find that with consistent practice, basic conversational Shona can be learned in a few weeks, and fluency comes naturally over time. I tailor lessons to your pace, goals, and interests to make learning Shona enjoyable and effective.
1. Practice with native speakers – Speak with family, friends, or tutors (online or in person). Being in Harare, you have lots of native speakers around you, so try casual conversations daily.
2. Take structured lessons – Platforms like Tutoroo or iTalki can guide you step by step. Lessons focusing on everyday conversation first are the most effective.
3. Use media in Shona – Listen to Shona radio, songs, or watch TV shows. It builds listening skills and helps you learn common phrases naturally.
4. Start small and repeat – Learn basic greetings, numbers, and common phrases first, then expand gradually. Repetition is key.
5. Combine speaking and writing – Even a little journaling in Shona or texting friends helps reinforce learning.
Shona is not difficult, especially if you practice with a native speaker, use it in real life, and start with simple conversation.
