Malay Tutor (Primary Level)

Private Malay Tutor in Singapore and Online

I have been tutoring Bahasa Melayu for the past 8 years since 2020. I tutor young children as young as 6 years to 15 years of age and have committed to several students for a few years. These students of mine come from different backgrounds - so whether you are Chinese, Indian, Eurasian, or not from here, you are welcome to come look for me if you want to brush up on you/or your child's Malay language.

As a Singaporean who went through the MOE Syllabus in Singapore, I know what it is like for students to prepare for Malay tests/exams. Normally, I prepare assessment books and create my own interactive games for children (especially those below 12years) to better engage them in Bahasa Melayu.

I create games using a website where they get to read English-Malay translations and get tested on their understanding. These games include, grammer tests, expressions, "peribahasa" (idioms) and simple phrases that are part of the school's syllabus so they remain relevant and still engaging to them. As a tutor, I make sure that they can remember, understand, and use them in their daily speaking or writing. During sessions, I keep things light and not so intense (unless the parents say otherwise! ).

Aside from tutoring, I am an MOE Certified Malay instructor (Intermediate). I have taught in a classroom setting in several schools where I introduced non-Malay students to basic language skills. This ensures that they are more familiar with phrases and words that explain Malay customs in a social setting. The things I teach them has made them more confident in speaking basic Malay in everyday interactions regardless of where they come from.

Whether they are meeting someone who speaks Malay, are Malaysian in their day-to-day speaking, or simply visiting our neighbouring countries, Malaysia/Indonesia as a start, they can learn the language quickly and with ease.

Frequently Asked Questions

How easy is it to learn Malay in Singapore?

A lot of students will find Malay rather easy with much dedication, exposure and consistency with the practices I give them. I try to keep to predictable schedule (x1 lesson a week) so that their focus on learning remains and they do not lose track of their own learning of the language.

I usually do help with their school homework if they really need my help but otherwise, I keep things light especially nearing their tests/exams as I know that comes with a lot of nerves. I make sure not too overwhelm my students and make sure they are aware of their own weaknesses in the language.

Is Malay easy to learn?

Nowadays, young students are very tech-savvy and they love their screen time, so in order for me to keep up with that and not get too bored from sitting down, I create interactive games on a website that will get them more involved in learning I test their knowledge and keep things different while still "playing" these games.
