Hey! Currently I am a MSc student in Microbiology in Copenhagen, but I am from Romania, but my mother tongue (and the language I am still the best at) is Hungarian. Besides biology and nature I am interested in travelling, languages and cultures. I speak English (C2), Romanian (B2-C1). I also learned a little Turkish, as I volunteered for 6 months in Turkey, and one of my tasks there was to keep English classes for locals (both in kindergarten and for young people/adults), who knew very little or no English, so I have some experience in teaching a language to people with whom I have no common language.
If you are interested in learning Hungarian, congratulations! You will learn one of the very few non-Indo-European languages in Europe. It is not impossible, even if it might be very different from the languages you know.
I think the easiest part will be the pronunciation, as we read out the words basically as they are written (unlike English, for example). The hardest part might be the grammar, as Hungarian is an agglutinative language, just like Finnish, Estonian, Japanese, Korean, Basque or the Turkic languages. What does this mean to you? Well, until you get familiarized with the most frequent suffixes and prefixes, you might find yourself in a situation in which you understand all the word roots in a sentence, but not the overall meaning. It will take some time, but hey! - take it as a challenge to learn something completely new!
Please reach out to me if you are interested, whatever level are you on!
This depends on what languages do you know. If you only speak e.g. English and/or a Romance language, the grammar and word forming system can seem totally different. However, if you speak an agglutinative language, you might grasp the logic quicker. Hungarian is also known for inventing its own words for many of the international loanwords. However, of course we took words from others, mostly from Slavic languages, Turkish. German, Latin and
(ancient) Greek.
Well, not if you have someone to practice with in this nice cosmopolitan city!
