Hello! My name is Athanasia, and I am a native Greek instructor with a passion for helping students unlock the beauty of the Greek language. I hold a BA in English Language and Literature, a specialized Certificate of Teaching Greek as a Foreign/Second Language, and I am currently a second-year Master’s student in Linguistics at the University of Helsinki. My training in linguistics means I treat language as a systematic structure. Instead of relying on random memorization, I help you understand the core grammatical patterns and phonological rules that make the Greek language so beautifully organized.
I have worked extensively as an English teacher, instructing students of all ages, from young children to adults. Additionally, I have successfully completed two rigorous teaching traineeships. This hands-on background has allowed me to perfect my teaching methodology, adapt to various learning speeds, and understand exactly how to keep students engaged and motivated, regardless of their age or background.
The easiest way is through personalized, communicative practice that connects Greek to languages you already know. Because Greek and Finnish share the exact same logical phonetic rule —you read words exactly how they are written— the quickest shortcut is mastering the alphabet and linking Greek vocabulary to Finnish and English roots. For example, the Finnish word musiikki is practically identical to the Greek μουσική (mousiki)! As a Helsinki-based linguist, I offer custom, immersive lessons online or in person at a city-center cafe or library, focusing on real-life conversation from day one.
Many students wonder, “Is Greek easy to learn, or is it too difficult?” The honest answer is that while Greek has a unique alphabet and a rich grammatical structure, it is incredibly systematic. Once you understand the phonetic rules (which are highly stable, just like in Finnish) and realize how many English words in science and philosophy have Greek roots, you will find it is absolutely achievable and far less intimidating than it seems!
