Hi! I am a native French speaker with a multicultural background. Born into a North African family, I grew up in the beautiful French West Indies, lived in Paris for 8 years, and have been living in Hong Kong since 2018. Outside of teaching, I also run my own French wine company!
Since arriving in Hong Kong, my teaching journey has been wonderfully diverse. I have had the pleasure of teaching children of all ages, teenagers, and adults. I have experience across a variety of settings: working as a teaching assistant in a kindergarten, teaching in a language center, providing private home tutoring, and relaxed conversation sessions.
By nature, I am gentle, calm, curious, and open-minded. I have a deep passion for the creative arts, humanities, and social sciences, and I love discovering the unique creativity of each person I meet. For me, the most important part of teaching is building a genuine connection with my students so you feel completely comfortable and enjoy our time together.
I adapt my lessons entirely to your personality, your specific requests, and even your energy level on any given day. Rather than following a strict, pre-established syllabus, I prefer an intuitive approach, mixing academic concepts, interactive games, and natural, free-flowing conversation.
First and foremost, if you take tutoring classes, finding a tutor you truly connect with makes all the difference. Having a good relationship and feeling comfortable with your teacher is essential for motivating you to continue.
Beyond that, the absolute best way to learn French is to truly want it and to cultivate a genuine interest in French and Francophone culture. Here in Hong Kong, you are incredibly lucky because there is a rich, vibrant French community! You can easily immerse yourself by visiting French restaurants, attending cultural events, or getting to know French people.
Between your lessons, I highly recommend surrounding yourself with the language. Watch French movies or series, and try to spend just 10 to 15 minutes a day interacting with French, by using a language app for exemple. If you take lessons 1 to 2 times a week and keep up this daily exposure, you can reach a conversational level in just 1 to 2 years.
For complete beginners, learning French can seem a bit intimidating at first, but it is very achievable! The great news for English speakers is that English and French share a massive amount of vocabulary. And if you already speak a Romance language (like Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese), it is even easier, as you will find many similarities in both grammar and word roots! Plus, because French culture is so globally recognized, you actually already know more French words than you think. Thanks to this, it is quite easy to guess the meaning of many words, and you will see rapid progress in your first few sessions. Within about 3 months, you should be able to read simple texts and form basic sentences.
What might be challenging:
- Listening comprehension: Native speakers talk fast, link words together (liaisons), and often drop syllables.
- Pronunciation: The famous guttural French "R" takes a little practice!
- Grammar & Conjugation: You will need to memorize masculine and feminine noun genders, as well as irregular verbs that do not follow standard rules.
What makes it easier:
- Shared vocabulary & roots: The crossover with English gives you a huge head start, and knowing another Romance language makes understanding the grammar and vocabulary feel much more intuitive.
- Abundant resources: Because French is one of the most studied languages in the world, there are endless resources available to help you learn, alongside the strong French cultural presence right here in Hong Kong.
