In my experience, there are two ways Filipino subject is taught in schools - grammar/language (wika) and panitikan (literature).
The former teaches basic language constructs such as nouns (pangngalan), pronouns (panghalip), pandiwa (verbs), among others. The latter teaches the literary pieces of famous writers such as Francisco Baltazar where the famous line “hahamakin ang lahat masunod ka lamang”
I have been teaching Filipino to my cousins and family who grew up in the US for 3 years now, I can start by teaching you the simplest words in Filipino in order to understand the basics of the language Tagalog. The Filipino language is very easy to learn, I will also teach you how the words will be pronounced, the Filipino language or Tagalog takes time to learn depending on how the student’s commitment to the subject.
the easiest way to learn Filipino now is the Modern way, which is online, or a one-on-one interaction with the teacher.
The time to learn Filipino always depends on how the student wants to commit on the subject/language.
