I am a retired accountant who is very much involved in the multicultural communities in Queensland. I have tutored English for migrants, and have also tutored conversational Filipino to Australians who were going to the Philippines to work or were planning to start a business there.
I am an Australian Marriage Celebrant and a Justice of the Peace (Qual).
As a celebrant, I conduct bi-lingual (Australian/Filipino) ceremonies when requested. As a JP (Qual) I deal with a lot of people from liguistically and culturally backgrounds.
Like any other language, starting to learn a new one could be daunting but exciting. With modern technology translations could be found in google. But learning how to use those words properly and being able to use them in conversations is very rewarding and empowering.
No. If you work consistently with your tutor, and follow her guidance, you should be speaking the language in no time. Maybe not fluently right away but with a bit of perseverance you should be able to speak and understand Filipino when in the company of local speakers.
