Hello!
I've recently moved to Paris, from Montreal (a French-speaking city) in Canada. My mother tongue is English, and I speak French at a working environment level.
I'm a designer and illustrator and studied at a prestigious university in New York City with nine years of working experience. English is not a difficult language to learn if you understand that when translating sentences we tend to say things in a reversed order. You will find that some words are very similar in French to the English language as they have a common Latin route, which is very helpful in remembering words. I helped my Parisian partner improve his English as well.
The younger generations in Paris seem to know a bit more English as more people go abroad for education, working at international level companies or simply learning it here and there from working in service industries.
As more North American television shows are also available on digital platforms, Parisians are able to learn from watching series and videos.
It is something that you have to practice on a regular basis, just like any other language. I believe a lot of the older generation does not speak English because they did not have access to it or were not exposed as they were growing up.
