I grew up in the faraway land of Oz (Australia) but now find myself wandering the cobblestone streets in Lisbon, Portugal. I have a passion for words- reading them, writing them, singing them…sometimes I even eat them. I spent the last two years travelling around but mostly living in Osaka, Japan. It was there that I found a job as an English teacher and fell in love with teaching.
My hobbies include: playing guitar (I’ve just started to learn!), hiking in nature, photography, reading, and fixing bicycles.
About my teaching style:
I am myself a language learner- I have studied Japanese, Spanish and now Portuguese. As a student I often feel frustrated when the teacher moves too quickly and I don’t have time to practice what I’m learning, and when the material is not relevant to my life or how I want to communicate. With this is mind I place particular focus on creating relaxed lessons where students learn a few things and get lots of opportunity to use them, either with me in conversation, or with others in the class.
The materials I use in class are designed to introduce grammar, vocabulary and native expressions in an interesting and usable way. I draw from popular culture, current affairs and English textbooks (TOEIC for example) and regularly update the content to ensure it remains current. If there is a topic or area of English that students want to learn, I tailor the lessons to include it. I am always open to new ideas and love to hear about what my students are interested in.
Correct pronunciation can be difficult, so I also focus my lessons on learning to recognise the different sounds that exist in English and how to re-create them perfectly. It’s a lot of fun when you have fifteen people all going ‘ooooooh’ ‘aaaaaaaah’ at once!
It’s extremely important to me that all my students get what they need out of the lesson and that they understand the material. I always leave time for questions at the end, and encourage students to actively engage and ask questions during the lesson.
Learning English requires practice and patience, but it anything is easy and possible if you set your mind to it.
To learn English well, you should practice at least 20 minutes each day. One or two hour long english sessions each week will speed up your progress. If you are dedicated you can be speaking conversationally in three months!
