I have taught English to Chinese students from primary school to postgraduate level, as well as teaching other LOTEs to English speakers for over 20 years now. My passion for Chinese is eclipsed only by my passion for using grammatically correct and beautiful English! I have a Bachelor of Asian Studies majoring in Chinese (Mandarin) and Chinese Studies and am now studying my Master of Asian Pacific Studies. I also hold a Diploma of Government and Certificate IV in Indonesian. I worked as a linguist in the Navy for almost twelve years, and have travelled throughout Asia as well as North America. I am also a qualified volunteer working for the Adult Migrant English Program - I teach English to migrants who have arrived here with little to no English in order to help them succeed in learning English. I have a holistic approach to understanding, and integrating, with Australian communities, the lifestyle and cultural norms. I am experienced in preparing you for Permanent Residency English exams, and also accomplished at assisting with job applications and labour market research.

I first taught English at a boarding school in Xi'an (China) in 1999, after which I then taught postgraduate English at Wuhan Technical University (武汉科技大学).

I am accomplished at reviewing and revising essays/written English, and I offer basic editing through to comprehensive revision and feedback to enable you to become confident using academic English in your schoolwork/degree.

I also thoroughly enjoy building your confidence for both formal and everyday conversation. I strongly believe in 'field trips' to local attractions, not only to introduce you to Canberra as a city that I love and have chosen to live in, but also to give you contextual English relevant to your needs and interests. For instance, I enjoy the art of bonsai and penjing, so taking students to the National Penjing & Bonsai Collection of Australia is very enjoyable for me. I also have organised to meet at the National Gallery of Australia and local art galleries (to discuss art terminology), Pialligo for the nurseries for those who enjoy gardening in their spare time, or even the airport for those who wish to focus on discussions around currency conversion, car hire, and so on. Visits to stores 🏬 and monthly markets to learn how to bargain and understand culturally acceptable practices regarding money 💰🤑💴 (such as asking for discounts and bargaining) is very helpful to those from countries where this is the norm, because in Australia it is not common! 😮👍🏻

While I am more accustomed to assisting Chinese students, I have been helping foreigners improve their English since we had our first exchange student at age 14, and I am probably just as interested in learning about your country and culture as you are in English! ☺️

I have a Working With Vulnerable People registration (also known as a blue card) within the ACT - which means the Australian Federal Police deem me a safe person to teach! 🫠👌🏻😊
