Hello! My name is Alice, and I am an experienced primary school teacher with a strong passion for helping children become confident, independent and enthusiastic learners.
I have experience teaching children across a range of primary year groups, including younger learners, and have taught Junior Infants, Senior Infants and Second Class as part of my teaching experience in Ireland. I studied and taught the Irish Primary School Curriculum, which shares many similarities with the British Primary Curriculum. I also currently teach within an American Curriculum school in Abu Dhabi, giving me experience working across different international curricula.
I have extensive experience supporting children who are learning English as an additional language (EAL), with a particular focus on developing phonics, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and comprehension.
For younger learners, I use regular phonics practice to develop accurate blending and decoding skills, helping children become more confident readers. I also focus on handwriting, sentence construction, spelling and early writing skills, gradually building children's independence and confidence.
For older primary students, I can provide support with reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing, spelling and primary mathematics, while helping children develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school.
My lessons are friendly, engaging and tailored to each child's individual needs. I believe children learn best when they feel comfortable, encouraged and successful, so I aim to make lessons interactive while still maintaining clear learning goals.
I am familiar with both British and American primary expectations and can adapt lessons to complement what your child is learning at school.
Whether your child needs support with phonics and early reading, wants to strengthen their writing and comprehension, or would benefit from additional primary maths practice, I would be happy to create personalised lessons based on their current ability and areas for development.
I am based in Abu Dhabi and can offer online tutoring as well as in-person lessons, subject to location and availability.
Subjects I can support with:
• Phonics & Early Reading
• English & Literacy
• Reading Comprehension
• Writing & Spelling
• Grammar & Vocabulary
• EAL Support
• Primary Mathematics
• Homework & School Support
• British & American Curriculum
• Primary School Entrance/Transition Support
I would be very happy to arrange an initial lesson to get to know your child, identify their strengths and areas for development, and create a learning approach that works for them.
Learning English in Abu Dhabi can be both exciting and challenging. Although children are surrounded by English at school and in everyday life, developing strong academic English skills can take time, particularly for children who speak another language at home.
As an experienced primary teacher, I understand the specific needs of EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners. I have worked with children at different stages of their English development and understand that every child learns at their own pace.
My lessons focus on building confidence as well as developing key skills in phonics, reading, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension and writing. For younger learners especially, I use engaging phonics and reading activities to help children develop accurate blending and decoding skills, while gradually building their vocabulary and confidence.
The aim is not simply to help children "learn English", but to help them become confident communicators, readers and writers who can succeed in the classroom.
With the right support, regular practice and lessons tailored to their individual needs, children can make excellent progress and develop a genuine enjoyment of learning English.
There is no set amount of time it takes to learn English, as every child is different. Progress depends on their age, previous exposure to English, confidence, how much English they use at home and school, and the areas they need to develop.
For children learning English as an additional language, regular exposure and consistent practice can make a significant difference. Some children may quickly develop confidence in speaking and understanding English, while reading, spelling, grammar and writing may take longer to develop.
As an experienced primary teacher, I tailor lessons to each child's individual level and learning needs. I focus on building strong foundations in phonics, reading, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar and writing, while making lessons enjoyable and encouraging.
Rather than focusing on a specific timeframe, I believe it is more helpful to set realistic, achievable goals and regularly monitor progress. With consistent support and practice, children can gradually become more confident and independent English learners.
The most important thing is to make learning English a positive experience. When children feel confident and enjoy their lessons, they are more motivated to practise and make progress.
