I speak both Mandarin Chinese and English with mother tongue profeciency, I also speak some Japanese, Norwegian, and Estonian. I am a green building specialist, and currently working as a research fellow while doing my PhD at TalTech. I have taught both Chinese and English in the past during my spare time, and my teaching style was usually described by my students as "unconventional, but pragmatic". Depending on the objective of the student, the teaching can be either informal (hobby-oriented) or formal (language level certification exam-oriented).
Yes, it is difficult, as there are not many native speakers in Estonia to practice with.
As a Group 5 (i.e. the hardest) language, Mandarin Chinese needs a good 2200 hours of study to properly learn. For most people, however, the goal is to learn enough Chinese to carry on conversations and read Chinese menus, magazines, and other publications -- which takes a lot less time.
