Hiya, this is Yvonne! I was born and raised in Shanghai, China and now studying English language and linguistics at the University of Leeds (so don’t worry about English communications). Besides Mandarin and English, I can also speak Cantonese, Shanghai dialect, and a bit of German.
As a linguistics student, I am not only passionate about languages but also have a very professional knowledge background. For native English speakers, Mandarin is more difficult to learn than other European languages because it belongs to a different language family. Pronunciation and writing are the biggest difficulties. However, I think Chinese has the simplest grammar among all the languages. It can even be described as having almost no grammar (no tense, not even plural). In addition, because of the long history we have, Chinese has many things that you cannot find in other languages, such as 成语 (similar to idioms), which are very interesting and attractive. If you are interested in learning Chinese, you need to be patient, because the beginning will be time-consuming, but when you master it, you will find what a beautiful language it is.
If you have never learned Chinese before and are interested in Chinese dialects, you are looking at the right person!
Harder to pick up than European languages for native English speakers. Easier for Asians.
It is a bit difficult to learn Chinese in Leeds because everyone here speak English obviously. But if you keep going to class and practicing, it is manageable to have daily conversations with Chinese native speakers.
