People often ask me, how do I teach my child Chinese? I wish I could give them a prototype answer, but the truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all kind of learning for your child.
My 15 years of teaching experiences (tutor, schools. - IB, Cambridge IGCSE, Government & International schools) in Singapore has taught me to be humble and genuine when I interact with students; the knowledge I've acquired when pursuing my Master in Education, Postgraduate Diploma in Education and BA in Chinese (Honours) has taught me to be versatile and adaptable to the different learning needs and goals of a child; my passion in teaching and engagement while teaching will show your child that learning Chinese can be fun and a breeze.
As the saying goes, 兴趣是最好的老师。(Loosely translated as Interest is the best teacher), My job as a tutor is to facilitate learning in your child and make Chinese learning an experience so fun and enjoyable that your child becomes self-directed in her learning. =)
With Chinese being a foreign language, creating a Chinese-speaking environment makes it easier for one to be immersed in the language, which can aid the latter in better understanding and face lesser resistance in learning.
Some easy methods will be getting your child to order food in Chinese and conversing in the language as often as possible.
Children often lack confidence in Chinese because the language seems foreign and difficult. They question why the same spelling has four different intonations; why is Chinese writing in characters that are hard to "draw".
These can be better managed by nurturing an inquisitive mind in a child and doing structured scaffolding and learning while teaching the child
