Hi, my name is Benjamin.

I am a native Mandarin and Cantonese speaker from Malaysia. I am a graduate of Diploma in Teaching Chinese Language in Confucius Institute, Nanyang Technological University, and have awarded with Distiction Award (特优生) for Class of 2022. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of my mother tongue, and I've jumped on any opportunity to teach it to others. I've now decided to take language teaching from a passion to the centre of my professional life. Apart from teaching in Tutoroo, I am also a part-time teacher in a prestigious language school in Singapore.

My teaching style is very adaptable. I believe a good teaching experience requires a thorough understanding of the student's current level, goals and needs. I take pride in assisting students from their very first Chinese character, all the way to refining advanced language concepts. I can give my lessons a stronger focus on conversational or business aspects based on mutual agreement. I also accept students interested in conversational Cantonese.

Beyond Singapore and Malaysia, I've lived in Suzhou and Shenzen, and worked for a Taiwanese company. It was fascinating to hear and read the similarities and differences between Standard Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua), Taiwanese Mandarin (Guoyu) and Singaporean/Malaysian Mandarin (Huayu). For the more advanced students, I would also love to show the different usage/character/pronunciation used by Chinese speaker from different regions. Do you know that if you use “Xihongshi” as tomato in Singapore or Malaysia, most mandarin speakers might be puzzled? This is because “Fanqie” is the commonly used word for tomato in southern China and South East Asia.

I love learning new languages myself. Beyond Mandarin, Cantonese and English, I can also speak Japanese, Malay and Indonesian, and my French is progressing. I can teach Chinese in these languages too. I've previously been awarded a scholarship for a Master degree in Tokyo, Japan. Beyond coursework, I've spent these three years learning Japanese while teaching Chinese to Japanese and Caucasian friends. Do you know that a lot of Chinese characters are also used in Japanese?
