Hi, This is Emma (ε°ζ). Currently an AUSIT (Australian Institute of Interpreters & Translators) member and an academic tutor at University of Sydney. I work as a community translator and interpreter and have seven years of experience teaching Chinese to kids, college students, working adults, and students with hearing impairment.
I'm happy to meet in the North Shore area and CBD. Lessons will be 1-on-1 and Google meet lessons are available. I have experience teaching a range of nationalities and have a great understanding of their differing needs e.g. Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Australian, Canadian, and Indonesian.
I usually use these books for teaching Mandarin:
π Chinese Made Easy for Kids
π Chinese Made Easy - a hardworking adult can finish the first book in three months
π HSK Standard Course
For Cantonese:
π Colloquial Cantonese - The Complete Course for Beginners
π Get Started in Cantonese
Note: There are five phonetic systems for Cantonese and I use Jyutping with adult learners.
*Lessons and handouts are tailored based on your interests.
*You are free to choose materials in fully English, traditional, or simplified Chinese characters.
*Materials and optional activities:
- Flashcards and games
- Chinese calligraphy
- doing Chinese arts and craft
- poetry (only for intermediate learners)
Find materials you truly enjoy and make it part of your daily routine, be it watching anime dubbed by Hong Kongers, watching TVB dramas, chatting with Cantonese speakers, or singing Canto songs. You can always ask me questions, send me recordings and sentences you make on Whatsapp, it is part of the service :)
At least two years of dedicated study and practice for conversational Cantonese, so practice practice and practice! 30 minutes every weekday is the bare minimum for adult learners. (Please don't leave it till the day before the lesson!) I recommend students to keep a notebook to write during lessons and make sentences with, and another glossary book to keep everything organized.
