📌I offer classes in Chatswood, CBD, and online. Due to time constraints, I’m not available for home visits.
📌Please note that fortnightly lessons are not available, as they are not effective for consistent progress. Regular weekly sessions are expected. Students are encouraged to 👉practice👈 and complete homework independently between lessons and bring any questions to the 👉next👈 lesson.
📌After the initial two weeks, which are paid to Tutoroo, students are kindly asked to pay the tutor every two weeks in advance. This helps ensure smooth scheduling and mutual commitment. Please note that cancellation policies apply.

Hi, This is Emma (小明). Here are some facts about me:
🌟 Nine years of experience teaching Chinese to kids, college students, working adults, and students with hearing impairment
🌟 Graduated with a Master's degree in Translation and Interpreting at UNSW, where I was honored as a dean’s list graduate
🌟 Winner of AUSIT Translation Competition 2024 (English to Chinese)
🌟 Active member of AUSIT (Australian Institute of Interpreters & Translators)
🌟 Former senior academic tutor at St Andrews College within University of Sydney
🌟 Current role: community translator for Multicultural NSW and NLP Language Analyst for an AI tool at iSEAO

Lessons will be 1-on-1 / 1-on-2 and Google Meet lessons are available. I have experience teaching a range of nationalities and have a great understanding of their differing needs e.g. Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Australian, Canadian, and Indonesian.

What is the easiest way to learn Cantonese in Sydney?

Find materials you truly enjoy and make them part of your daily routine, be it watching anime/cartoons like Peppa Pig/Bluey dubbed in Cantonese, watching TVB dramas, chatting with Cantonese speakers, or singing Canto songs.

How much time does it take to learn Cantonese in Sydney?

At least two years of dedicated study and practice for conversational Cantonese, so practice practice, and practice! 30 minutes every weekday is the bare minimum for adult learners. (Please don't leave it till the day before the lesson!) I recommend students keep a notebook to write during lessons and make sentences with, and another glossary book to keep everything organized.

I am a heritage cantonese learner – I grew up being exposed to cantonese and other Chinese dialects at home, but over time lost the ability to speak it. I‘ve been practicing Mandarin with Emma for almost 2 months now, and have already seen significant improvement to my Chinese compared to when I practiced by myself. She‘s very informative and quick to explain things, so the lessons are very engaging and fun. Emma is an incredible Cantonese and Mandarin tutor who tailors each lesson to your interests and your language proficiency level perfectly. She's always prepared for each lesson and makes the challenging learning process fun and accessible. I can't say enough good things about Emma! I'm greatly enjoying the snippets of cultural and historical elements in my lessons as I had hoped to learn more about my own Hong Kong heritage that I've lost over the years, and Emma takes note of any topics I'm keen to learn more about and brings it to the next lesson. Great lesson. A call was organised prior to the lesson, free of charge, to help cater the lesson precisely to what I needed. Emma is always super prepared for lessons and has created helpful learning resources that she shares with her students. Emma is a very patient tutor. I'm learning Cantonese as an adult, so it's an uphill climb with such a difficult language, but she makes every lesson relatable to my daily life, and teaches me the parts that are essential to know. For six months, she has transformed my interactions with my partner's Cantonese-speaking family, as I am now able to understand quite a lot of their conversations, and participate in it as well. I'll be always grateful that she helped craft the Cantonese portion of my wedding speech. It was received so well, and people asked me how I got the intonations and vocabulary so well. I would highly recommend Emma for her low-pressure lessons, patience, availability to help out outside lessons, and flexible yet structured lesson plans.

Emma tutored me in person for about 6 months. She was an excellent teacher, able to speak both mandarin and Cantonese and was very knowledgeable about chinese and Hong Kong culture. Mandarin can be a daunting language for an English speaker but Emma made it accessible and was overall a great teacher.
