I had taught Cantonese in group and private lessons both in the NYC classroom and online for 3 years. I enjoy teaching and love to empower students to converse in Cantonese with confidence. I try to incorporate different teaching techniques to ensure the lesson is interactive and fun. For private lesson, I will adapt the lesson based on the individual student need, interest, and Cantonese ability. I had taught beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Most of my past students learn Cantonese so that they can communicate better with their family members and some for the work reason. I am fluent in English, understand Mandarin, and conversational in Spanish.
I think learning Cantonese is easy since the verb does not need to change based on the tense. Since there is huge Cantonese population in New York City, the students have many opportunities to practice with day-to-day interaction like at the restaurant, classmate, grocery shopping, etc. The key is to practice daily or at least frequently for 10 minutes. I think this apply to all language learning.
It seems to me the most difficult part to learn Cantonese is to master the tone and there are many different pronunciation systems. I would suggest focusing on one of the most common one such as jyutping. Another challenge is the spoken Cantonese and writing are different sometime. One can overcome this challenge by listening and speaking more with native speakers, watching Cantonese Cartoon and movie. Since Chinese have many characters and require lot of memorizations, it can be challenged to learn how to read and write, which require patience and practice, but it is doable.
