I am first and foremost a theatre actor and playwright from Hong Kong, with a Master’s degree in Playwriting from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. I have written and performed in Cantonese for many years, with a particular interest in the musicality of the Cantonese language. This has made me highly sensitive to pronunciation, rhythm, intonation and the subtle ways in which Cantonese is spoken in everyday life.
My theatre background also shapes the way I teach Cantonese. As an actor and drama teacher, I have spent many years helping performers understand not only what their lines mean, but how to speak them naturally, express emotions and communicate through voice and rhythm. I bring this approach into Cantonese teaching, helping students develop an ear for the language and learn how Cantonese is actually spoken and expressed in real life — rather than simply learning vocabulary and grammar from a textbook.
I have also worked on translating and adapting scripts from Cantonese into Mandarin and English, which has given me a deeper understanding of the differences between languages and of what can be lost when Cantonese expressions are translated too literally.
In short, I use my theatre experience to help students learn Cantonese as a living, expressive language — one that they can hear, feel, understand and actually use.
I teach Cantonese pronunciation by starting with the Cantonese tone system — the nine tones and six tone contours. Rather than asking students to memorise vocabulary and pronunciation word by word, I introduce Cantonese through its underlying sound system, giving them a simple and systematic way to understand how the language works.
Once students understand the basic patterns of Cantonese tones, pronunciation becomes much easier to grasp and remember. They can begin to recognise and reproduce sounds more naturally, instead of relying on memorisation. You may even find that speaking Cantonese feels a little like singing — because tones, rhythm and pitch are an essential part of how the language works.
