I am an MA philosophy student at AUB so I constantly encounter translation challenges. I have experience in tutoring Arabic and English.
I am currently self-learning German now so I’d be happy to share my experience/tips with others. I am Palestinian in origin, but I live in Lebanon, so I have multiple Arabic dialects (Palestinian, Lebanese) and I am very good in the formal Arabic language. I have lived with/am friends with people who previously came from the USA, and Germany wanting to learn Arabic. I kind of lived through and was part of that experience with them.
Generally, it is easier to learn arabic in beirut than any other place because people usually express themselves using two languages in one sentence. The result is a mixed conversation. Plus for some reason, in Beirut, people in everyday shops bars coffee houses..become excited, supportive and willing to help when they hear a foreigner trying to speak arabic.
You have to start with the minimal, as in a beginers’ class for a take-off then spend time with people who speak arabic and your language for practice. Follow up with youtube videos for extra.
