I graduated from the University of Manchester with a 2:1 BSc in Management (Hons) and have gotten an 8.5 for the IELTS test while applying for my UK student visa.
I also am an avid reader which is honestly extremely rare among my peers whom I highly doubt have even read 5 classics or watched 5 actual documentaries (not the animal planet or crimes one) in their entire lifetimes, which is sadly due to the rise of streaming services such as Netflix & Disney+ which is a much more attractive & fun alternative as opposed to reading a book.
So please do not worry!
I have full faith that I will be a very good choice to teach my students how to excel in both written & spoken English.
Honestly, I would recommend just speaking it more often & if possible, to read more books.
But even if somebody lacks the necessary patience or attention to read a book, watching English shows/documentaries is also an excellent way to increase your understanding of various different contexts & to improve your vocabulary.
I think if the goal is to just converse and understand what you’re reading, I can guarantee that in as little as 3-6 months, my students; whether they be foreigners or growing up in a household where English is not their first language; would be indistinguishable from any other native English speaker.
But if the goal is to fully understand and appreciate the intricacies & complexities of the language, such as knowing what perfect present tense, superlative nouns etc is, then much much more time would be needed, around 9 months to a year.
