I have worked over 25 years in education 10 of which were spent teaching various subjects in secondary and post-secondary educational settings.
I was born in the UK and grew up in Texas, USA where I lived and schooled through university. I returned to the UK in 2008 and am stuck with an American accent.
I am currently in the midst of completing my Level 5 - 240 hour TEFL qualification and plan to teach English to various UK migrants on a full-time basis.
I have a passion for engaging with people from different cultures and backgrounds and think teaching English is a great way to help people adjust and comfortably communicate using this globally recognized language.
The best ice breaker is a smile. Learning English in a big city offers many opportunities. Enroll in language schools or community center classes for structured learning. Join language exchange meetups to practice with native speakers. Engage in immersive experiences by joining clubs, attending events, or volunteering. Consume English media—watch movies, listen to podcasts, and read books and newspapers. Consider hiring a private tutor for personalized instruction. Practice with locals during daily interactions. Combining these methods will enhance your English learning experience.
The time it takes to learn a new language depends on the opportunities created. Putting yourself out there and giving it maximum effort will help foster the best environment to engage, practice and learn.
