I am a teaching student at the University of South Africa. I have a BA in Afrikaans and Linguistics and can tutor in Afrikaans and English. Afrikaans is not a hard language to learn. I believe in visual learning when learning a language, like connecting a picture with the word in the language or putting labels on common items. I also feel that interaction is a great way to practice language skills. It depends on personal language skills, but I’d say it would take a few months to learn the basics of Afrikaans like how to greet in Afrikaans and so on. I especially have experience teaching the language to small children in the Foundation phase and am happy to help with schoolwork and studying Afrikaans.
Through interaction with people who speak the language. Dialogue is an important part of learning a language, and interaction with others will help you practice your language skills.
Yes, it is not a very hard language. It belongs to the Germanic language family and is in the same family as German and Dutch. Dutch and Afrikaans have mutual intelligibility, so I will be able to respond to someone speaking to me in Dutch and they will understand me and I will understand them. With practice it won’t be that hard to learn Afrikaans.
