Ciao! This is Margherita, you’re an Italiano teacher in Amsterdam. I’m 19 years old, born and raised nearby the beautiful lake Como, in Northern Italy. I moved here to study Media at UvA two months ago. Fun fact: I was brought here by my interest in the English language, as mine is an international bachelor. Indeed I have a C2 certified level and I have lived for a year in the US when I was 17. Before that, I had a “French phase” where I was really into France and the French language, then a Chinese one which lasted quite some time till I called it quit, and ultimately a Spanish one. Languages are a passion of mine and I’m currently in the process of learning Dutch (impossible, I know), but in the midst of this melting pot, I sometimes just have a physical need of speaking and “being Italian”, using those slang words you just can’t translate into English. Plus, I love the Italian language. That brings me here. So if you not only want to learn Italian rules and grammar but also words like social, scilla, appizzo, just tag along!
The easiness in learning a language is strictly related to how far that language is from your mother tongue. Learning Italian will clearly be easier for a Spanish speaking person than a Chinese. But nothing is impossible as long as you love what you are doing and you stay motivated!
It can take as much as you decide. Learning a language is really about surrounding yourself with it as much as possible, and grow increasingly accustomed to it. As with anything, the hardest part is getting started, but once you’ve done it you’ll find it increasingly easy and self-rewarding. Learning a language is actually A LOT of fun.
