I'm from Berlin, 43 years old, a graphic designer by trade and have been living in New Zealand, Spain and Australia in the past 17 years.
I've taught an Australian lady German for about a year now. I'm a good listener and enjoy the exchange of thoughts and life experiences and any open and honest conversation. About Australia I like most the flora and fauna. I wish people, particularly from different cultural backgrounds, would come together much more often. I think that's crucial for the future of Australia's society.
It's always easiest to learn a language in a country that speaks it. However, you can do a lot here in Sydney as well, to expose yourself to the German language. Learning a language consists of 2 main parts – the active part, speaking/writing and the more passive part – listening/understanding.
That depends very much on the students capabilities. I won't tell you otherwise. I believe that it's easier for some and harder for others. It also depends on the level you want to achieve. So there isn't really a simple answer for that.
