I am an Italian and English native speaker. I grew up in New York and did all my schooling there. I majored in fine arts, language and literature at Bennington College in Vermont and have since lived and worked in Italy as well as in Spain and Mexico. I speak fluent Spanish, as well as some Catalan, French, and Portuguese. I studied how to teach foreign languages through culture at a university level and have taught English at “La Tenuta dei ciclamini” in Umbria as well as Italian at the Village school of north Bennington in Vermont. I graduated college in 2019 and have tutored privately in English and Italian in Spain since graduating.
English has a simple enough grammar to master but it is difficult if you are coming from a non anglophone background and maybe didn’t grow up hearing it at all. I believe grammar is important but only when it is taught together with pronunciation and cultural references, to make a foreign language easy to learn, all the rules have to be explained in a way that is interesting and logical.
Lisbon is a great city to learn English in. Most people here speak English with a very good pronunciation (Portugal is one of the few countries where foreign movies aren’t dubbed in Portuguese). If you prioritize learning English, within a few months you can have a conversation, and from there keep practicing until you feel comfortable with the level you are at.
