Hallo / senang bertemu, my name is Jovanka! A Dutch national born in Indonesia, I have been living in Taipei for a few years. I was raised speaking Dutch and Indonesian, and I am a near-native speaker of English. Due to my educational and professional background, I am also fluent in Mandarin.
I am an academic editor and want to use my language skills to help a broader public learn about other cultures, as well as achieve their personal goals. I am happy to teach you, beginner, to advanced level Dutch and English, and beginner to intermediate Indonesian!
Being in academia, I highly appreciate individuality and curiosity, so I am keen to learn from you, too! I empathize with and am sensitive to different approaches, so our lessons will be tailored according to your needs.
For you to optimize your learning experience, I highly encourage you to communicate with me your objectives in as much detail as possible! During my time at Leiden University, I have taught Taiwanese and Chinese students the fundamentals of the Dutch language (e.g., vowel/consonant pronunciation, numbers, simple vocabulary and phrases to get by).
MA Anthropology, National Taiwan University (2022, exp.)
MA Asian Studies, Leiden University (2019)
BA Chinese Studies, Leiden University (2017)
- Consulting Editor/Research Assistant, Academia Sinica
- Cataloguing Assistant, NTU Museum of Anthropology
- Freelance Author and Researcher, Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands
I would say, if not with me, then by watching videos online! There are not many Dutch people in Taiwan to begin with, and globally, Dutch is spoken by only a small number of people.
Yes, because of the practical reasons mentioned earlier, as well as the fact that Dutch grammar is pretty hard to master. However, it will eventually come down to your own efforts! It does help a lot if you are already proficient in English and/or German.
