I’m a native Chinese speaker with proficient English. I’m born in China and completed its education to the second half of year 9 before I moved to Australia. I’ve completed HSC with the elective Chinese and Literature.
I’ve been keen to maintain and even improve my mandarin through speaking, reading and writing. I’m able to teach from the starting point to the complicated Literature, including some classic ancient Chinese. In the middle of the process there will be concept of our culture for better understanding to the language. Or, language is the aid to understand culture.
It is easy to start with finding connections and differences on pronunciation with English, and understand the basics words(like letters) that make up our vocabulary. This will provide a solid foundation.
It’s easy to start with but takes effort to be advance. There is a joke that Chinese has no grammar. It just functions in an implicit form that requires effort. Same words could have different meanings, pronunciations, and this requires drawing links to the context.
