Private Chinese / Mandarin Tutor in Amsterdam and Online

Do you want to learn Chinese by reading literature?

Hello, everyone. I'm Ada, a Ph.D. student at Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis. I hold a BA in journalism and mass communication from Fudan University, Shanghai, an MA in English literature, and an RMA in literary studies at the University of Amsterdam.

I grew up in Shanghai. Mandarin is my first language, but I was also immersed in the Shanghainese dialect. I also spent one year learning Japanese at a local institution in Shanghai when I was around fourteen and have been trying since then to immerse myself in virtual Japanese when I have the opportunity. Thanks to that, I'm also capable of speaking a little bit of Japanese. I'm also spending a major amount of time living in France since I moved to Europe, so my French is around B1 level (but speaking French is still a challenge to me).

I have experience in offering tutorials in world literature to native English speakers around 14 years old (living in Boston, US). I've been offering Chinese tutorials to an Australian student since last July when we close read Ted Chiang's sci-fi stories translated into Chinese. I also have experience offering Chinese tutorials to a Portuguese student who works as a journalist in Macau.

Frequently Asked Questions

How easy is it to learn Chinese / Mandarin in Amsterdam?

It depends on your motivations for learning Chinese/Mandarin. It's not easy to learn Chinese, but it can give you great sense of achievement if you have patience and perseverance.

What is the easiest way to learn Chinese / Mandarin in Amsterdam?

I think reading always helps immensively to improve your vocabulary, to remember the characters and to really see the difference between Chinese and European grammars. Watching youtube videos, talking to your Chinese friends (going to Chinatown!) and joining Chinese debating clubs at school are some of the tips my students have adopted to improve their speaking capability.
